عروة بن الزبير

Urwa ibn al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam (may God be pleased with him); al-Waqidi reports through Abd al-Hamid ibn Ja'far from his father: I heard Urwa say 'I dwelt seven years in Egypt and married there, and found its people fighters bearing more than their strength — for Amr conquered it only by treaty, covenant and a levy fixed upon them'.

Overview

Urwa ibn al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam, son of al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam 1.

His testimony about Egypt

al-Baladhuri, citing al-Waqidi through a chain, reports that Urwa said he had stayed in Egypt seven years and married there. He saw its people exhausted, with burdens laid on them beyond their strength. He said that Amr had conquered it only by agreement, by a covenant and by a fixed tribute imposed on them 1.

His journey to al-Walid

al-Salabi reports that his leg was amputated from the middle of the shin on his journey to al-Walid, after an ulcer had appeared on it. He reports that his son Muhammad was killed by the beasts on that journey, and that he died in the year 93 AH 2.

Hisham ibn Urwa

Abu al-Mundhir Hisham b. Urwa b. al-Zubayr b. al-Awwam — one of Medina's authoritative hadith transmitters, of the company of al-Zuhri and Hammad; Ibn Khallikan records Caliph al-Mansur's exchange with him and the Medinans' dispute over which grave at al-Baqi' was his. Tarikh Baghdad (#7383): born the year al-Husayn was killed (61), he saw Ibn 'Umar, Jabir, Anas and Sahl b. Sa'd, heard his uncle Ibn al-Zubayr, his father Urwa, Wahb b. Kaysan, Muhammad b. al-Munkadir and al-Zuhri; Malik, al-Thawri, Ibn 'Uyayna, al-Qattan, Waki', Layth b. Sa'd and Ibn Jurayj transmitted from him; he came to al-Mansur at Baghdad and died there — and the suwayq anecdote: al-Mansur recalled drinking thin gruel at his door as a boy, and when Hisham pleaded a hundred-thousand debt the caliph granted ten thousand 'while your heart is at ease'.
