Summary
Malik transmits from Ibn Shihab, from Urwa ibn al-Zubayr, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abd al-Qari, that Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him) said: why do men give gifts to their sons and then withhold them? If one of their sons dies, the father says: my property is in my hand, I gave it to no one; and if he dies, he says: it is for my son, I had given it to him. Whoever gives a gift that the giver has not taken into possession, until it is his heirs' if he dies, it is void. 1
