«على رسلكم، إن الله لم يكتبها علينا، إلا أن نشاء»
A verbatim excerpt of the text, forty words at most; the full text is in the edition cited under sources
Summary
A report that Malik transmits from Hisham ibn Urwa from his father, that Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him) recited a prostration verse while on the pulpit on a Friday, came down and prostrated, and the people prostrated with him. The next Friday he recited it again, and the people prepared to prostrate. He said to them: wait a moment, for God did not prescribe it for us unless we choose. He did not prostrate and forbade them to prostrate. The editor notes that Abu Mus'ab and Yahya ibn Bukayr in al-Bayhaqi (2/321) transmitted it, and that one copy has "and we prostrated". 1 2
