Summary

The first hadith in the chapter on the Qur'an. Yahya transmits from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Urwa ibn al-Zubayr from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abd al-Qari, that he heard Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him) say: I heard Hisham ibn Hakim ibn Hizam (may God be pleased with him) recite Surat al-Furqan differently from how the Prophet ﷺ had taught it to me. I nearly rushed at him, then gave him time until he finished. Then I seized him by his cloak and brought him to the Prophet and told him. The Prophet asked Hisham to recite, and he did, and the Prophet said: this is how it was revealed. Then he asked Umar to recite, and he did, and the Prophet said: this is how it was revealed. He said the Qur'an was revealed in seven ahruf, so recite what is easy of it. The editor notes that Abu Mus'ab, Suwayd and al-Qa'nabi transmitted it in Abu Dawud (1475), al-Tinisi in al-Bukhari (2419), Yahya ibn Yahya al-Naysaburi in Muslim (2/202), and al-Shafi'i in al-Risala (752). 1 2
