Chain of transmission
Summary
A report that Malik transmits from Ibn Shihab from Abu Salama ibn Abd al-Rahman from Abu Hurayra (may God be pleased with him), in the chapter on encouragement to pray in Ramadan: the Prophet ﷺ encouraged the night prayers of Ramadan without commanding them as an obligation, and said whoever prays Ramadan in faith and seeking reward is forgiven his past sin. Ibn Shihab said the Prophet died with the matter so, and it remained so in the caliphate of Abu Bakr and the early caliphate of Umar. The editor notes Nawawi's view that "without obligation" means it was not ordered as a requirement but as a recommendation. He says the transmitters differed on its chain through Malik: Yahya, Ibn Abi Uways, Abd al-Razzaq and Uthman ibn Umar connected it with the mention of Abu Hurayra, while al-Qa'nabi, Abu Mus'ab, Ibn Wahb and most Muwatta transmitters sent it as a mursal from Abu Salama, as Ibn Abd al-Barr said. Ibn Shihab's students transmitted it connected, which strengthens Yahya's version. 1 2
