Abu Salama ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf

Abu Salama ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf al-Zuhri, a senior Successor in Medina, trustworthy, learned and a prolific transmitter. ¹

Ibn Hajar writes: Abu Salama ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf al-Zuhri of Medina — his name is given as Abd Allah, also said to be Isma'il — trustworthy and prolific, of the third layer; he died in 94 AH, also said 104, and he was born in the twenties of the Hijra ². The Kashif al-Dhahabi material embedded in this edition adds: he narrated from his father, 'A'isha and Abu Hurayra (may God be pleased with him); his son Umar, al-Zuhri and Muhammad ibn Amr narrated from him, and there are differing reports on his death ².

Ibn Hajar reports from Yahya ibn Ma'in and al-Bukhari that he heard nothing from his father, and that he is better known by his kunya than by his name, so that Ibn Abi Hatim listed him in his book of kunyas ².

He held the judgeship of Medina and died in 94 AH; his given name is given as Abd Allah or Isma'il. ¹

Abu Salama ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf was one of Medina's senior men of learning, the son of the great Companion Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf. He was a trustworthy jurist who narrated much hadith, served as judge of Medina, and died around the year 100 of the Hijra ².
