Summary
Malik transmits that Ibn Shihab was asked about the fosterage of an adult. He said: Urwa ibn al-Zubayr told me that Abu Hudhayfa ibn Utba (may God be pleased with him) ibn Rabia, a Companion who witnessed Badr, had adopted Salim, who was called Salim, client of Abu Hudhayfa, just as the Messenger adopted Zayd ibn Haritha (may God be pleased with him). Abu Hudhayfa married him to his brother's daughter Fatima bint al-Walid ibn Utba, one of the first emigrants, since he thought of Salim as his son. When God revealed what He revealed about Zayd ibn Haritha, each of them was returned to his father, and whoever had no known father was returned to his client. Sahla bint Suhayl (may God be pleased with her), Abu Hudhayfa's wife, came to the Messenger and said: we used to regard Salim as a son; he came in to me while I was in a state of undress, and we have only one room. What do you think? The Messenger said: nurse him five sucklings, and he becomes forbidden by her milk. Aisha took this ruling for those men she wished to let in to her, but the rest of the Prophet ﷺ's wives refused to let anyone enter upon them by such fosterage, and said: by God, we do not see what the Messenger told Sahla as anything but a concession for Salim alone. 1
