«إنما أنت حجر، ولولا أني رأيت رسول الله قبلك ما قبلتك، ثم قبله»
A verbatim excerpt of the text, forty words at most; the full text is in the edition cited under sources
Summary
The first hadith in the chapter on kissing the Black Stone in touching it. Malik transmits from Hisham ibn Urwa, from his father, that Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him) said, while circumambulating the House, to the Black Stone: you are only a stone, and if I had not seen the Messenger of God ﷺ kiss you I would not kiss you; then he kissed it. The editor notes that the hadith is relayed in Malik's Muwatta; that Ibn Wahb transmitted it from Yunus and Amr ibn al-Harith from Ibn Shihab from Salim from his father, and from Zayd ibn Aslam from his father from Umar; that the relayed version is more sound because of the corroboration by Mamar, Ibn Uyayna and Ibn Jurayj; and that the connected version is from Suwayd ibn Ghafla from Umar. 1
