Sacred space and pilgrimageWorship and the pillars
Tawaf is walking seven times around the sacred Kaaba in Mecca with prayers, remembrance, and peace in the heart.
Tawaf is a sacred act of worship where Muslims circumambulate the Kaaba seven times counter-clockwise, keeping the Sacred House on their left. Beginning each circuit at the Black Stone with prayers and praise, believers from all lands walk together in devotion, reflecting unity and shared faith in God.
Storytellers (10–12) read the Explorers text, then cross to the Scholars text.
The liturgical circumambulation of the Kaaba, constituting an essential pillar in both the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages and an esteemed independent voluntary devotion. The rite requires seven continuous counter-clockwise circuits performed in a state of ritual purity, keeping the Kaaba on the worshiper's left. Commencing and concluding aligned with the Black Stone with praises, it includes Sunna practices such as brisk walking (ramal) during early circuits for men and praying two units behind the Station of Abraham (Maqam Ibrahim). Encompassing the arrival, effusion (ifadah), and farewell circumambulations, Tawaf symbolizes the cosmic unity of believers focused upon monotheism.
