Worship and the pillars

Umrah is a blessed visit to the Sacred House in Mecca, where Muslims circumambulate the Kaaba and walk between Safa and Marwah with prayers.

Umrah is the lesser pilgrimage to the Sacred Mosque in Mecca, which can be performed at any time of the year. The pilgrim enters the sacred state of ihram, circumambulates the Kaaba seven times (tawaf), walks seven times between Safa and Marwah (sa'i), and concludes with clipping or shaving the hair, bringing spiritual renewal and unity.

Storytellers (10–12) read the Explorers text, then cross to the Scholars text.

The lesser pilgrimage in Islamic law, consisting of visiting the Sacred House in Mecca to perform specific consecrated rites: entering the state of ihram at the designated station (miqat), performing seven circuits of tawaf around the Kaaba, seven traverses (sa'i) between the hills of Safa and Marwah, and concluding with shaving or clipping the hair (tahallul). Sanctioned by the Qur'an and Sunna as expiation for sins, Umrah may be performed at any time throughout the calendar year, with distinctive merit attached to its observance during Ramadan, fostering perpetual spiritual renewal and connection to the sanctuary of Mecca.

Overview

'Umra is, in language, a visit; in usage, tawaf of the House and sa'y between Safa and Marwa in ihram. Hajj includes its acts and adds the standing at 'Arafa, the night at Mina, and more. 1

Ruling

The Malikis and most Hanafis hold it an emphatic sunna once in a lifetime; some Hanafis obligatory on their usage of wajib; the evident Shafi'i position and the Hanbali school hold it a lifetime obligation once, on "complete the hajj and 'umra for God" and 'A'isha's report "their jihad without fighting: hajj and 'umra"; the recommenders cite Jabir: "was 'umra obligatory? He said: no — and your performing it is better." 1 2

Its merit

Among the reports on its merit: "'umra to 'umra is expiation for what lies between them." 2
