Summary
The first hadith in the chapter on combining the pilgrimage. Malik transmits from Jafar ibn Muhammad, from his father, that al-Miqdad ibn al-Aswad came in to Ali ibn Abi Talib (may God be pleased with him) at al-Suqya, while he was watering his camels with flour and fodder; he said: Uthman ibn Affan (may God be pleased with him) forbids combining the pilgrimage and the lesser pilgrimage. Ali went out with the marks of flour and fodder on his hands until he went in to Uthman and said: do you forbid combining the pilgrimage and the lesser pilgrimage? Uthman said: that is my opinion. Ali went out angry, saying: at Your call, O God, at Your call, for pilgrimage and lesser pilgrimage together. The editor notes that al-Bayhaqi transmitted from a route of Marwan ibn al-Hakam that Ali entered ihram for both when he saw Uthman forbid the enjoyment (tamattu). 1
