Muhammad al-Baqir ibn Ali ibn al-Husayn

Abu Ja'far Muhammad b. Ali b. al-Husayn b. Ali b. Abi Talib, the Hashimi Alid of Medina known as al-Baqir, one of the leading jurists among the Successors of Medina; born in 56 AH, he was the chief of the Banu Hashim in his time and famous as "al-Baqir" from the saying "he split open knowledge" — he opened it and knew its surface and its depths. ¹

He narrated from his father, Jabir b. Abdallah, Abu Sa'id, Ibn Umar, Abdallah b. Ja'far, and others, and transmitted mursal reports from A'isha, Umm Salama, and Ibn Abbas; narrating from him were his son Ja'far b. Muhammad, Amr b. Dinar, al-A'mash, al-Awza'i, Ibn Jurayj, Qurra b. Khalid, and many more, and al-Nasa'i's Sunan carries his report through his grandfather Ali. Al-Nasa'i and others counted him among the jurists of the Medinan Successors, and it is said he prayed a hundred and fifty rak'as each day and night. ¹

Abu Nu'aym and a group say he died in 114 AH, and it is also said in 117 AH; Mus'ab al-Zubayri, as al-Shirazi transmits, likewise gives 114 AH. ^{1 2}
