«سنوا بهم سنة أهل الكتاب»
A verbatim excerpt of the text, forty words at most; the full text is in the edition cited under sources
Summary
Malik transmits from Jafar ibn Muhammad ibn Ali, from his father, that Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him) mentioned the Magians and said: I do not know what to do about their affair. Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf (may God be pleased with him) said: I bear witness that I heard the Prophet ﷺ say: treat them as you treat the People of the Book. The editor notes that Abu Musab and al-Qanabi transmitted it from Malik. Ibn Abd al-Barr (al-Tamhid 2/114) says it is a broken report, because Muhammad ibn Ali did not meet Umar or Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf; the version of Abu Ali al-Hanafi from Malik with the addition 'from his grandfather' is also broken; the taking of jizya from the Magians of Hajar is established from the hadith of Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf in al-Bukhari, and he refers to al-Tirmidhi. 1
