Summary

A report that Malik transmits from Zayd ibn Aslam from his father Aslam, client of Umar: the Prophet ﷺ was travelling on one of his journeys at night with Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him) beside him. Umar asked him something three times and he did not answer. Umar blamed himself for insisting, and urged his camel forward until he was ahead of people, fearing that a revelation might come down about him. He had not waited long before he heard a shout calling him. He came to the Prophet and greeted him, and the Prophet told him that a surah had come down that night that he loved more than anything the sun has risen on, and recited the beginning of Surat al-Fath. The editor explains in detail that the transmitters of the Muwatta gave it as a mursal (including al-Qa'nabi and Isma'il ibn Abi Uways in al-Bukhari, 4833 and 5012), and that Abd al-Rahman ibn Ghazwan, Muhammad ibn Harb and Muhammad ibn Khalid ibn Utha connected it from Malik from Zayd from his father from Umar (Ahmad 1/31, al-Tirmidhi 3262). Al-Daraqutni said the Muwatta transmitters sent it, and Ibn Hajar in the introduction to Fath al-Bari held the connected version of al-Bukhari sound, since most of the story is reported from Umar. The editor notes that the views of al-Bazzar and Ibn Abd al-Barr complicate this. 1 2
