«هو الطهور ماؤه، الحل ميتته»
A verbatim excerpt of the text, forty words at most; the full text is in the edition cited under sources
Summary
The first hadith in the chapter on the water for ablution. Yahya transmits from Malik from Safwan ibn Sulaym from Sa'id ibn Salama of the Azraq family from al-Mughira ibn Abi Burda of the Banu Abd al-Dar, who heard Abu Hurayra (may God be pleased with him) say that a man asked the Prophet ﷺ about performing ablution with sea water, since they sail on it and carry only a little water, and if they perform ablution with it they become thirsty. He answered that the sea is pure and its dead animals are lawful. The editor cites Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, al-Nasa'i, Ibn Majah, Ibn Khuzayma, Ibn Hibban and al-Hakim, and gives Ibn Abd al-Barr's view that the chain is weak for the ignorance of the two transmitters, while the text is accepted by the scholars. Al-Daraqutni in his Ilal says the most accurate reports are Malik's and those who follow him from Safwan. 1 2
