«ثم مسح رأسه بيديه فأقبل بهما وأدبر؛ بدأ بمقدم رأسه ثم ذهب بهما إلى قفاه ثم ردهما حتى رجع إلى المكان الذي بدأ منه»
A verbatim excerpt of the text, forty words at most; the full text is in the edition cited under sources
Summary
The first hadith in the chapter on performing ablution, in the Muwatta's Book of Prayer. The editor notes that one manuscript places before it the heading "Book of Purity", which is not in the old manuscripts. Yahya transmits from Malik from Amr ibn Yahya al-Mazini from his father, that he asked Abdullah ibn Zayd ibn Asim (may God be pleased with him), a Companion, to show him how the Prophet ﷺ performed ablution: he asked for water, washed his hands twice, rinsed the mouth and nose three times, washed his face three times, his arms to the elbows twice, wiped his head with his hands from the front to the back and back to the start, and washed his feet. The editor cites al-Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, al-Nasa'i and Ibn Majah, and notes that Malik alone said Abdullah ibn Zayd was Amr's grandfather through his mother. 1 2
