Muwatta 46

A report that Malik transmits from Ishaq ibn Abdullah ibn Abi Talha from Humayda from her aunt Kabsha bint Ka'b ibn Malik, who was the wife of Ibn Abi Qatada al-Ansari, in the chapter on water for ablution: Abu Qatada entered and she poured water for his ablution. A cat came to drink from it, and he tilted the vessel for it until it drank. When he saw her watching him in wonder, he told her that the Prophet ﷺ said a cat is not unclean, since it is one of those who move about among people. Malik says there is no harm in its leftover unless there is uncleanness visible on its mouth. The editor notes that Yahya named the narrator as Humayda bint Abi Ubayda ibn Farwa, an error that the other Muwatta transmitters did not share, and that al-Daraqutni said the raised version is sound and that Malik's chain is the best, since it preserves the names of the women.
