Chain of transmission
Summary
Malik transmits from Nafi, from Abdullah ibn Umar, that Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him) gave a horse in God's path and wanted to buy it, so he asked the Prophet ﷺ, who forbade him to buy it or to return to his charity. The editor notes that Abu Musab transmitted it from Malik, and through him Ibn Hibban and al-Baghawi; many others did too in al-Bukhari, Abu Dawud, Muslim and elsewhere. Ibn Abd al-Barr (al-Tamhid 14/74-75) says Malik made it part of the Musnad of Ibn Umar in the view of most transmitters; Ma'n ibn Isa transmitted it from Malik, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar, from Umar, making it part of Umar's Musnad; and al-Daraqutni in al-'Ilal preferred the Muwatta version. 1
