Chain of transmission
Summary
The first report in the chapter on taking charity and who may receive it. Malik transmits from Zayd ibn Aslam, from Ata ibn Yasar, as a mursal report, that the Prophet ﷺ said: charity is not lawful for a rich man except for five: a fighter in God's path, a collector of it, a debtor, a man who bought it with his property, or a man whose poor neighbour is given charity and the poor man gives it as a gift to the rich man. The editor notes that Abu Musab, al-Qanabi in Abu Dawud, and al-Shaybani transmitted it from Malik; that Malik sent it, and Ibn Uyayna and Ismail ibn Umayya followed him; that al-Thawri transmitted it from Zayd from Ata as 'the trustworthy one told me'; that Mamar connected it from Abu Said al-Khudri (may God be pleased with him); and that the editor prefers the mursal version because Malik, Ibn Uyayna and Ismail ibn Umayya agree on it and the Thawri narrators vary. 1
