«إذا توضأ العبد المؤمن فتمضمض خرجت الخطايا من فيه، وإذا استنثر خرجت الخطايا من أنفه»
A verbatim excerpt of the text, forty words at most; the full text is in the edition cited under sources
Summary
A report that Malik transmits from Zayd ibn Aslam from Ata ibn Yasar from Abd Allah al-Sunabihi, in the chapter on general rules of ablution: when the believer performs ablution, his sins leave with each limb he washes: from his mouth by rinsing, from his nose by blowing, from his face even from under the eyelids, from his hands even from under the nails, from his head even from his ears, and from his feet even from under the nails; then his walk to the mosque and his prayer become a supererogatory act. The editor cites al-Nasa'i, al-Hakim, al-Bayhaqi and Ahmad. Al-Bukhari, as asked by al-Tirmidhi, thought Malik erred in "Abd Allah al-Sunabihi"; the narrator was Abu Abd Allah Abd al-Rahman ibn Usayla, who did not hear from the Prophet ﷺ, so the report is mursal. Ibn Abd al-Barr followed Ibn Ma'in's view that his narrations are mursal, but the editor considers that judgment open to question, and prefers Ibn Ma'in's first remark that he may have had companionship, supported by his explicit hearing in another hadith in Ahmad. 1 2 3
