Overview

'Ata' ibn Yasar of Medina, an imam, jurist, preacher and admonisher, precise and authoritative, of great standing; he narrated from Abu Ayyub, Zayd, 'A'isha, Abu Hurayra (may God be pleased with him), Usama ibn Zayd (may God be pleased with him) and others, while Zayd ibn Aslam, Safwan ibn Sulaym, 'Amr ibn Dinar and others narrated from him. He died in 103 AH. 2

His entry in Taqrib al-Tahdhib

Ibn Hajar writes: 'Ata' ibn Yasar al-Hilali, Abu Muhammad of Medina, mawla of Maymuna — trustworthy and excellent, a man of exhortations and worship, of the younger second layer; he died in 94 AH, though some say later 3. The Kashif al-Dhahabi material embedded in this edition adds: he narrated from his patroness Maymuna, Ubayy ibn Ka'b, Abu Dharr and Zayd ibn Thabit (may God be pleased with him); Zayd ibn Aslam, Sharik ibn Abi Namir and others narrated from him; he was among the senior and most learned Successors, and he died in 103 AH 3.

A dispute over his hearing

In the commentary Ibn Hajar reports that Abu Zur'a said he heard nothing from Umar, that Abu Hatim said he heard nothing from Abu Mas'ud al-Badri or from Abd Allah ibn Mas'ud, and that al-Bukhari disagreed, affirming for him hearing from Ibn Mas'ud 3.

For younger visitors

'Ata' ibn Yasar was one of Medina's scholars in the generation after the Companions. He was the mawla of Maymuna, the Prophet ﷺ's wife, known for much worship and exhortation; he narrated hadith from a group of Companions and died around the year 100 of the Hijra 3.

Notes for researchers

  • Taqrib al-Tahdhib, entry 4605 (Majmu'at al-kutub scan, p. 431).
  • On his death: "94 AH, though some say later" in the Taqrib text; Kashif al-Dhahabi and Siyar A'lam al-Nubala' give 103; the museum record's summary, from Muruj al-Dhahab, says he died aged eighty-four — the divergence is recorded and unsettled.
  • "Of the younger second layer" is al-Taqrib's grading of his generation.
