Chain of transmission
Summary
Malik transmits from Zayd ibn Aslam, from Ata ibn Yasar, that the Messenger of God ﷺ sent a gift to Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him), and Umar refused it. The Prophet asked him: why did you refuse it? Umar said: did you not tell us that it is better for one of us not to take anything from anyone? The Prophet said: that applies to asking; but what comes without asking is a provision God gives you. Umar said: by Him in whose hand my soul is, I will not ask anyone for anything, and nothing will come to me without asking that I will not take. The editor notes Ibn Abd al-Barr's view that there is no disagreement among the Muwatta transmitters that the hadith is relayed, and that it is connected through sound routes from Umar. 1
