Summary
Malik transmits from Zayd ibn Aslam, from his father, that Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him) appointed a client of his called Hunay over the protected pasture (al-hima). He said to him: Hunay, lower your wing over the people, and beware the prayer of the wronged, for the prayer of the wronged is answered. Admit the owner of the small herd and the owner of the flock; but beware of the camels of Ibn Affan and Ibn Awf, for if their livestock perish they come back to Medina with palms and crops; whereas if the owner of the small herd and flock sees his livestock perish, he will come to me with his sons and say: Commander of the Faithful, will you leave them to me, may you have no father? Water and pasture are easier for me than gold and silver. Umar said they think he has wronged them, but this is their land and their water, for which they fought in the time of ignorance and submitted to Islam; had it not been for the wealth carried on in God's path, he would not have protected a single span of their land for them. 1
