Summary

Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf (may God be pleased with him) al-Zuhri al-Qurashi was among the earliest Muslims during the secret call in Mecca, according to al-Raheeq al-Makhtum. He was one of the eight of the first vanguard who embraced Islam through the call of Abu Bakr 1 2.

In al-Raheeq al-Makhtum

After his own conversion, Abu Bakr was active in the call. He began calling those among his people whom he trusted, who visited him and sat with him. Through his call, Uthman ibn Affan (may God be pleased with him), al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam (may God be pleased with him), Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, and Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, both of Banu Zuhra, and Talha ibn Ubaydullah (may God be pleased with him) embraced Islam. These eight, together with the first four, formed the first vanguard and the forerunners of Islam 1 2. He belongs to Banu Zuhra 1.

Not covered here

This chapter of the book mentions nothing beyond his early conversion. The rest of his story is completed in its own places in the book and in other sources.

For young visitors

Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf was among the first to believe in the Prophet ﷺ. His friend Abu Bakr called him, and he embraced Islam. He was one of the eight who went ahead of others into Islam.

From Sheikh Omar Abdelkafy's lecture series Al Dinu Al Qayem

Sheikh Omar Abdelkafy recounts that Umar set up a council of six, and that Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf was to choose between Uthman and Ali (needs_source: the order is as the sheikh gives it) 3 4. He recounts that Abd al-Rahman asked Uthman to govern the people by the Qur'an, the Sunna and the conduct of the two predecessors, and Uthman agreed, while Ali refused (needs_source) 5 6. He recounts that Talha, al-Zubayr and Sa'd withdrew, leaving Abd al-Rahman with Ali and Uthman; he then raised Uthman's hand, and Uthman accepted the conditions of the community (needs_source) 7 8.

He recounts that Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf offered his sister in marriage to Bilal ibn Rabah (may God be pleased with him) (needs_source) 9. He recounts that Abd al-Rahman threw his cloak over the man who attacked Umar, and that the man then killed himself (needs_source) 10.

The sheikh lists him among the Companions as a merchant (needs_source) 11. He recounts that after his death his wealth was divided among his heirs, and that its start was in Medina, while the rest of the account is garbled in the automatic transcript (needs_source) 12.
