Summary
Malik transmits from Abd al-Malik ibn Qurayr, from Muhammad ibn Sirin, that a man came to Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him) saying that he and a companion had killed a gazelle while in ihram; Umar and a man beside him judged a goat for it. When the man heard Umar's ruling he said: he is the Commander of the Faithful, he cannot judge about a gazelle. Umar asked him whether he recited the Surah of al-Ma'ida; when he said no, Umar said: had you told me, I would have struck you hard. He cited the verse about judging in Surah al-Ma'ida, then said: this is Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf (may God be pleased with him). 1
