Summary
Malik transmits from Hilal ibn Usama, from Ata ibn Yasar, from Umar ibn al-Hakam, that he said: I came to the Messenger and said: Messenger of God, a slave-girl of mine used to herd my sheep. I went to her and a sheep was missing, so I asked her about it, and she said: the wolf ate it. I was saddened by that, and I am one of the sons of Adam, so I struck her face, and on me is a slave to free; should I free her? The Messenger said to her: where is God? She said: in heaven. He said: who am I? She said: you are the Messenger of God ﷺ. The Messenger said: free her. The editor notes that Malik named him Umar ibn al-Hakam, which is an error; the correct name is Muawiya ibn al-Hakam al-Sulami, as Ibn Abd al-Barr and others said. 1
