Summary
Malik transmits from Zayd ibn Aslam, from Ata ibn Yasar, that Kab al-Ahbar came from al-Sham in a caravan; when they were on part of the road they found game meat, and Kab gave them a fatwa to eat it. When they came to Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him) in Medina and reported this, he said: who gave you this fatwa? They said: Kab. Umar said: I had appointed him over you until you returned. Then, when they were on part of the road to Mecca, a locust passed them, and Kab gave them a fatwa to take it and eat it. Umar said: what led you to give them that fatwa? Kab said: it is game of the sea. Umar said: how do you know? He said: it is the sneezing of a fish, which it sneezes every year twice. The editor notes that this discussion is not worth hearing about the origin of locusts, and may well be among the fancies of the People of the Book. 1
