Overview

Abd al-Rahman ibn Usayla al-Sunabihi, Abu Abd Allah, one of the jurists of the Successors in Egypt. Al-Shirazi mentions him with Abu Tamim Abd Allah ibn Malik al-Jaysh-ani, and says that they were among the companions of Umar. 1

In al-Isaba

Ibn Hajar gives him his own entry in al-Isaba, no. 4792: "Abd al-Rahman ibn Usayla — in the diminutive with two unpointed letters — ibn Usal al-Muradi, Abu Ubayd Allah al-Sunabihi the Yemeni, resident in Syria"; he records that he came as an envoy and found that the Prophet ﷺ had died, so he prayed behind Abu Bakr, and he narrated from him and from Umar, Ali, Bilal, Sa'd ibn Ubada, Mu'adh ibn Jabal and a group. 2

The scholars on him

Aslam the client of Umar, Ata' ibn Yasar, Abd Allah ibn Muhayriz, Abu al-Khayr al-Yazani, Yunus ibn Maysara and others narrated from him. Ibn Sa'd called him trustworthy with little hadith; Ibn Yunus says he witnessed the conquest of Egypt; Ibn Ma'in says he lived on into the time of Abd al-Malik; and al-Bukhari listed him among those who died between seventy and eighty (AH). 2
