«كان يصلي من الليل إحدى عشرة ركعة يوتر منها بواحدة، فإذا فرغ اضطجع على شقه الأيمن»

A verbatim excerpt of the text, forty words at most; the full text is in the edition cited under sources

Chain of transmission

  1. Malik ibn Anas
  2. Muhammad ibn Shihab al-Zuhri
  3. Urwa ibn al-Zubayr
  4. Aisha bint Abi Bakr

Summary

The first hadith in the chapter on the Prophet ﷺ's witr prayer. Yahya transmits from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Urwa ibn al-Zubayr from Aisha: the Prophet prayed eleven rak'as at night, ending with one as the witr, and when he finished he lay down on his right side. The editor cites Muslim, Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, al-Nasa'i, Ahmad and al-Shafi'i from Malik's transmitters. Ibn Abd al-Barr says Ibn Shihab's students placed the lying down after the two rak'as of dawn, not after the witr, and that Malik's words cannot be disputed for their place in memory. The editor holds that the agreement of Zuhri's students that the lying down is after dawn is the preserved version, as Ibn Hajar stated, so Malik's version of this word is odd. 1 2
