Chain of transmission
- Malik ibn Anas
- Muhammad ibn Shihab al-Zuhri
- Salim ibn Abdallah ibn Umar
- Abdullah ibn Umar ibn al-Khattab
Summary
The first hadith in the chapter on opening the prayer. Yahya transmits from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Salim ibn Abdullah from Abdullah ibn Umar: when the Prophet ﷺ opened the prayer he raised his hands level with his shoulders, and when he raised his head from bowing he raised them the same way and said "God hears whoever praises Him; our Lord, to You is praise", but did not do so in prostration. The editor cites al-Bukhari, Muslim, al-Nasa'i, Ibn Hibban, al-Darimi and al-Shafi'i. Ibn Abd al-Barr says that Yahya and a group of Muwatta transmitters did not mention raising the hands at the descent into bowing, while Ibn Wahb, Ibn al-Qasim, al-Qattan, Ibn Mahdi, Ibn al-Mubarak and others transmitted it with the raising at bowing too, which is the correct version and what all of Ibn Shihab's students transmitted; scholars consider the omission a possible error of Malik, since memorisers transmitted both forms from him. 1 2 3
