Scripture and its sciences

In brief

Salim b. Abdallah b. Umar b. al-Khattab, Abu Abdallah al-Adawi al-Umari of Medina, the jurist and proof, one who combined learning, practice, asceticism, and nobility; he heard his father, A'isha, Abu Hurayra (may God be pleased with him), Rafi' b. Khadij, Safina, and Sa'id b. al-Musayyab, while Amr b. Dinar, al-Zuhri, Ubaydallah b. Umar, Salih b. Kaysan, Musa b. Uqba, Hanzala b. Abi Sufyan, and many others narrated from him. 1

His austerity

He was very dark-skinned, afflicted in the throat, rough in living, wore wool, and was humble — it is said he bought a garment for two dirhams. Malik said "no one in his time resembled the righteous of the past more in asceticism and merit", Ahmad and Ishaq held the soundest chains from al-Zuhri to be "from Salim, from his father", and Maymun b. Mihran said "Salim was on his father's pattern, without comfort". 2

His death

He died in 106 AH at an advanced age. 3
