«إن الله عز وجل بعث إلينا محمداً ولا نعلم شيئاً، فإنما نفعل كما رأيناه يفعل»
A verbatim excerpt of the text, forty words at most; the full text is in the edition cited under sources
Chain of transmission
- Malik ibn Anas
- Muhammad ibn Shihab al-Zuhri
- Khalid ibn Asid
Summary
The first hadith in the chapter on shortening the prayer on a journey. Yahya transmits from Malik from Ibn Shihab from a man of the family of Khalid ibn Usayd: he asked Abdullah ibn Umar that they find the prayer of fear and the prayer at home in the Qur'an, but do not find the prayer of travel. Ibn Umar said God sent Muhammad to them when they knew nothing, so they do as they saw him do. The editor notes that Malik did not name the questioner and dropped a man from the chain. Ibn Abd al-Barr says the questioner was Umayya ibn Abdullah ibn Khalid ibn Usayd, transmitted by Ibn Shihab from Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr (may God be pleased with him) from Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Harith from Umayya from Ibn Umar. The editor holds that Zuhri's report through Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr is weak because of Abdullah's weakness, and cites Abd al-Razzaq, Ahmad, Ibn Majah, al-Nasa'i, Ibn Khuzayma, Ibn Hibban and al-Hakim. 1
