«من أكل من هذه الشجرة فلا يقرب مساجدنا، يؤذينا بريح الثوم»
A verbatim excerpt of the text, forty words at most; the full text is in the edition cited under sources
Chain of transmission
Summary
The first hadith in the chapter on the prohibition of entering the mosque with the smell of garlic and covering the mouth. Yahya transmits from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab as a mursal: the Prophet ﷺ forbade anyone who had eaten garlic to approach the mosques, because its smell harms those praying. The editor notes that Ibn Abd al-Barr said it is mursal in the Muwatta in all its transmitters except an odd connected report through Abu Hurayra (may God be pleased with him), and that Ma'mar, Yunus, and Ibrahim ibn Sa'd connected it through Ibn Shihab. He cites the connected version in Abd al-Razzaq, Ahmad, Muslim, Ibn Majah, Ibn Hibban and al-Bayhaqi. 1
