Chain of transmission
Summary
The first hadith in the chapter on the poll tax (jizya) of the People of the Book and the Magians. Malik transmits from Ibn Shihab, who said: it reached me that the Prophet ﷺ took jizya from the Magians of Bahrayn, that Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him) took it from the Magians of Persia, and that Uthman ibn Affan (may God be pleased with him) took it from the Berbers. The editor notes that al-Shaybani transmitted it from Malik; Abu Musab transmitted from Malik that it reached him, without Ibn Shihab. Ibn Abd al-Barr (al-Tamhid 12/63-65) says this is how all the Muwatta transmitters have it; Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi transmitted it from Malik from Ibn Shihab from al-Saib ibn Yazid as a connected report (al-Tabarani 6660), and al-Haythami weakened al-Husayn ibn Salama, who transmitted it from Ibn Mahdi, though the editor disagrees with that weakening; he holds that its single route from Malik signals its strangeness, as al-Daraqutni noted. 1
