Chain of transmission
Summary
The first report in the chapter on walking in front of the funeral bier. Malik transmits from Ibn Shihab, as a mursal report, that the Prophet ﷺ, Abu Bakr and Umar used to walk in front of the bier, as did the caliphs after them, and Abdullah ibn Umar. The editor notes that Abu Musab, Suwayd and al-Shaybani transmitted it without naming Abu Bakr and Umar, and that Ibn Abd al-Barr (al-Tamhid 2/83-85) says it is mursal in the Muwatta, and that some connected it from Malik, but the sound view is that it is mursal. A group of reliable companions of Ibn Shihab, such as Ibn Uyayna, Mamar and Musa ibn Uqba, connected it from Ibn Umar, and the connected report from Ibn Umar is in Ahmad, Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, al-Nasai and Ibn Hibban. Al-Tirmidhi reported that the people of hadith all consider the mursal more sound, and Ibn al-Mubarak said the mursal report from al-Zuhri is more sound than Ibn Uyayna's. The editor thinks attributing the connection to Mamar is questionable, because it comes from the transmission of Yahya ibn al-Yaman, who is weak when he conflicts; the correct view is the mursal. 1
