«ما دفن نبي قط إلا في مكانه الذي توفي فيه»
A verbatim excerpt of the text, forty words at most; the full text is in the edition cited under sources
Summary
The first report in the chapter on burial of the dead. A report from Malik that it reached him that the Prophet ﷺ died on Monday and was buried on Tuesday. People prayed over him individually, with no one leading them. They disagreed: some said he should be buried by the pulpit, and others said in al-Baqi. Abu Bakr came and reported that he had heard the Prophet say that no prophet is ever buried except in the place where he died; so a grave was dug for him there. When they wanted to take off his shirt for washing, they heard a voice saying: do not take off the shirt. So it was not removed, and he was washed with it on. The editor notes that Abu Musab and Suwayd transmitted it from Malik, and Ibn Abd al-Barr (al-Tamhid 24/394) says he does not know it reported in this sequence except from this report of Malik's, though it is sound from various routes and different reports that Malik gathered. 1
