Summary
The first report in the Book of Funerals and in the chapter on washing the dead. Malik transmits from Jafar ibn Muhammad, from his father, as a mursal report, that the Prophet ﷺ was washed in a shirt. The editor notes that this book appears after the Book of Jihad in some copies, an old difference in the Muwatta's order, and that he kept it here. Abu Musab, Suwayd and al-Shafii in the Musnad transmitted it from Malik. Ibn Abd al-Barr (al-Tamhid 2/15) reports that all other narrators of the Muwatta sent it as mursal except Said ibn Ufayr, who made it from Aisha. The ruling is that it is mursal according to Malik, but it is a famous report among the scholars of the biographies and campaigns, and it is also transmitted connected from Aisha by a sound route, through Abbad ibn Abdallah ibn al-Zubayr in Ahmad, Abu Dawud, Ibn Hibban and al-Hakim. 1
