«إن الشمس والقمر آيتان من آيات الله، لا يخسفان لموت أحد ولا لحياته، فإذا رأيتم ذلك فادعوا الله وكبروا وتصدقوا»
A verbatim excerpt of the text, forty words at most; the full text is in the edition cited under sources
Summary
The first hadith in the chapter on practice at the solar eclipse prayer. Yahya transmits from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa from his father from Aisha: the sun was eclipsed in the Prophet ﷺ's time and he led people in prayer. He prolonged the standing, then the bowing, then stood and prolonged the standing less than before, bowed less than before, then prostrated, and did the same in the second rak'a. When he finished the sun had cleared. He preached, praised God, and said the sun and moon are two of God's signs, which are not eclipsed for anyone's death or life; when you see this, call on God, glorify Him and give charity. Then he said: O community of Muhammad, none is more jealous than God when His servant commits adultery or His female servant does; if you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much. The editor notes the printed heading "Book of the Eclipse Prayer" has no basis in the approved manuscripts. He cites al-Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, al-Nasa'i, Ibn Hibban, Abu Awana, al-Tahawi and al-Bayhaqi, and refers to al-Tamhid. 1
