«إذا مس أحدكم ذكره فليتوضأ»
A verbatim excerpt of the text, forty words at most; the full text is in the edition cited under sources
Chain of transmission
Summary
The first hadith in the chapter on ablution after touching the private parts. Yahya transmits from Malik from Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr (may God be pleased with him) ibn Muhammad ibn Amr ibn Hazm (may God be pleased with him), who heard Urwa ibn al-Zubayr say that he entered on Marwan ibn al-Hakam and they discussed what requires ablution. Marwan mentioned touching the penis, and Urwa said he did not know that; Marwan told him that Busra bint Safwan (may God be pleased with her) had told him she heard the Prophet ﷺ order whoever touches his penis to perform ablution. The editor notes that Yahya's copy made the chain "from Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr from Muhammad ibn Amr ibn Hazm", which Ibn Abd al-Barr counted as an error that spoiled the chain, and that the correct form is "ibn", since the hadith is Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr's from Urwa. The editor cites Abu Dawud, al-Nasa'i, al-Shafi'i and al-Bayhaqi, and notes that Yahya ibn Ma'in said the most authentic hadith on touching the penis is this hadith of Malik, and Ahmad said something similar. 1 2
