Overview

Marwan ibn al-Hakam ibn Abi al-As ibn Umayya, of the Banu Umayya. He took power after the death of Mu'awiya ibn Yazid and the strife of Ibn al-Zubayr. 1

In the army of Ifriqiya

He was in the army that Uthman sent to Ifriqiya under the command of Abdallah ibn Sa'd ibn Abi Sarh, together with his brother al-Harith ibn al-Hakam. This connects to the account of the first raid on Ifriqiya. 2

The day of the Camel

Al-Mas'udi relates that on the day of the Camel, when al-Zubayr and Talha withdrew, he said that he did not mind from which direction he shot. He shot Talha in his elbow, and killed him. 3

His succession and death

Al-Mas'udi says that he turned the oath of allegiance from Khalid ibn Yazid to his son Abd al-Malik. There are two reports of his death: it is said that his wife Fakhita, the mother of Khalid, placed a cushion over his face until he died, and it is said that she gave him poisoned milk to drink. His days were nine months, and he died aged sixty-three. 1
