Chain of transmission
- Malik ibn Anas
- Sumayy, mawla of Abu Bakr ibn Abd al-Rahman
Summary
Malik transmits from Sumayy, client of Abu Bakr ibn Abd al-Rahman, that he heard Abu Bakr ibn Abd al-Rahman say: my father and I were with Marwan ibn al-Hakam, the governor of Medina, when it was mentioned to him that Abu Hurayra (may God be pleased with him) says whoever rises in a state of major impurity breaks his fast that day. Marwan swore that Abd al-Rahman should go to the Mother of the Believers Aisha and Umm Salama. He went, and Marwan went with him; they asked, and said: it is not as Abu Hurayra said; the Prophet ﷺ would rise in a state of major impurity from intercourse, not a wet dream, and then fast. They came back to Marwan; Abd al-Rahman rode to Abu Hurayra at al-Aqiq, and Abu Hurayra said: I have no knowledge of that; someone informed me of it. The editor notes that the phrase 'wife of the Prophet' occurs, and that Abu Musab (780), Suwayd, al-Qa'nabi and Ibn Wahb transmitted it from Malik, and refers to al-Tamhid (17/31). 1
