«ما من امرئ يتوضأ فيحسن وضوءه ثم يصلي الصلاة إلا غفر له ما بينه وبين الصلاة الأخرى حتى يصليها»
A verbatim excerpt of the text, forty words at most; the full text is in the edition cited under sources
Summary
A report that Malik transmits from Hisham ibn Urwa from his father, from Humran, client of Uthman ibn Affan (may God be pleased with him), in the chapter on general rules of ablution: Uthman sat on the benches and the muezzin came to call him to the afternoon prayer. He asked for water and performed ablution, then swore that he would tell them a hadith which he would not have told them had it not been in God's book. He had heard the Prophet ﷺ say that whoever performs ablution well and then prays is forgiven what lies between him and the next prayer. Yahya says that Malik thought Uthman meant the verse in Surat Hud about establishing prayer and the good deeds removing evil ones. The editor says Abu Mus'ab's version "were it not for a verse" is clearer, and cites Ibn Hibban, al-Nasa'i and Abu Awana, and notes that Ibn Abd al-Barr said the Muwatta version does not mention performing ablution three times. 1 2
