«فمن شاء صامه، ومن شاء تركه»
A verbatim excerpt of the text, forty words at most; the full text is in the edition cited under sources
Summary
The first hadith in the chapter on fasting on the day of Ashura. Malik transmits from Hisham ibn Urwa, from his father, from Aisha, wife of the Prophet ﷺ, that she said: the day of Ashura was a day Quraysh fasted in the time of ignorance, and the Messenger of God fasted it in the time of ignorance. When he came to Medina he fasted it and ordered its fasting; when Ramadan was made obligatory it became the obligation, and the day of Ashura was left; whoever wished fasted it, and whoever wished left it. The editor notes that Abu Musab, Suwayd, al-Qa'nabi (al-Bukhari 2002), Abu Dawud, al-Jawhari, al-Bayhaqi and al-Shafii transmitted it, and refers to al-Tamhid (22/148). 1
