«إن شئت فصم، وإن شئت فأفطر»
A verbatim excerpt of the text, forty words at most; the full text is in the edition cited under sources
Summary
Malik transmits from Hisham ibn Urwa, from his father, that Hamza ibn Amr al-Aslami said to the Prophet ﷺ: Messenger of God, I am a man who fasts; may I fast while travelling? The Prophet said to him: if you wish, fast; if you wish, break your fast. The editor notes that Yahya narrated it this way from Hisham from his father from Hamza; most of Malik's transmitters narrated it from Hisham from his father from Aisha that Hamza said it; and that the hadith is preserved from Hisham from his father from Aisha, as Ibn Uyayna, Hammad ibn Salama, Ibn Ajlan, Waki and al-Layth transmitted it. Ibn Abd al-Barr (al-Tamhid 22/146-147) considered Yahya's version not a plain error, since Sulayman ibn Yasar transmitted it from Hamza himself, and Urwa may have heard it from Aisha and from Abu Mirwah from Hamza. 1
