In brief

Abd al-Rahman b. Hurmuz al-A'raj of Medina, mawla of Muhammad b. Rabi'a b. al-Harith b. Abd al-Muttalib b. Hashim — his clientage is also given to the Makhzum — among the qur'an-readers and hadith men of the Medinans. 1

His reading and codices

He heard Abu Hurayra (may God be pleased with him), Abu Sa'id, Abdallah b. Malik b. Buhayna, and a group, and took the reading by presentation from Abu Hurayra, Ibn Abbas, and Abdallah b. Ayyash b. Abi Rabi'a; he transcribed the Qur'an, taught it, and copied codices, and Nafi' b. Abi Nu'aym recited to him. Ibn Lahi'a reports through Abu al-Nadr that he was the first to set down Arabic orthography and was the most knowing of men in Quraysh's genealogy. 1

Narrators from him and his journey

Al-Zuhri, Abu al-Zinad, Salih b. Kaysan, Yahya b. Sa'id al-Ansari, Abdallah b. Lahi'a, and others narrated from him; among his famous mursal reports is his saying that people inherited a Ramadan in which the unbelievers were cursed, and that a reader reciting al-Baqara in eight rak'as who then stood twelve was seen by people as having lightened it. Late in life he travelled to Egypt and died garrisoned at Alexandria in 117 AH on the dating of Mus'ab al-Zubayri and a group, having passed eighty years. 2
