Summary
Malik transmits from Abu al-Zinad, from al-Araj, from Abu Hurayra (may God be pleased with him), a report the Prophet ﷺ gave about a man who had never done a good deed. He told his family: when I die, burn me, then scatter half of my ashes on land and half in the sea. By God, if God has power over me, He will punish me with a punishment He has given no one of the worlds. When he died they did as he commanded; God commanded the land and it gathered what was in it, and commanded the sea and it gathered what was in it. Then God asked him: why did you do this? He said: from fear of You, Lord, and You know best. So He forgave him. The editor notes that Abu Musab, Ismail ibn Abi Uways in al-Bukhari, Rawh ibn Ubada in Muslim, Suwayd, al-Qanabi and Ibn Wahb transmitted it from Malik. Ibn Abd al-Barr (al-Tamhid 18/37-38) notes that most of the Muwatta narrators agreed with Yahya in raising it, while Mus'ab al-Zubayri and al-Qanabi in one version made it a statement of Abu Hurayra. 1
