In brief
Abu Abdallah Ubaydallah b. Abdallah b. Utba b. Mas'ud al-Hudhali, one of the Seven Fuqaha of Medina, nephew of the Companion Abdallah b. Mas'ud, and a leading Successor. 2
His hearing and narration
He met many Companions and heard from Ibn Abbas, Abu Hurayra (may God be pleased with him), and the Mother of the Believers A'isha; Abu al-Zinad, al-Zuhri, and others narrated from him. Al-Zuhri said he found four who "turned" (him to the truth) and named Ubaydallah among them, and that he had heard much from the scholars and thought himself sufficient until he met Ubaydallah, at which point it was as if he held nothing at all. 2
With Umar b. Abd al-Aziz and his death
Umar b. Abd al-Aziz said that a session with Ubaydallah was dearer to him than the world, and that he would buy one of Abdallah's nights from the treasury for a thousand dinars, then repay the Muslims' treasury many times over through his counsel, advice, and guidance; he was a learned ascetic. He died at Medina in 102 AH, also said 99 or 98 AH. 2
