Chain of transmission

  1. Malik ibn Anas
  2. Damra ibn Sa'id al-Mazini
  3. Utba ibn Mas'ud

Summary

The first hadith in the chapter on the takbir and recitation in the festival prayers. Yahya transmits from Malik from Damra ibn Sa'id al-Mazini from Ubayd Allah ibn Abdullah ibn Utba ibn Mas'ud: Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him) asked Abu Waqid al-Laythi (may God be pleased with him) what the Prophet ﷺ used to recite at the sacrifice festival and the breaking of the fast, and he said Surat Qaf and Surat al-Qamar. The editor cites Muslim, Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, al-Nasa'i, Ahmad, Ibn Hibban, Abd al-Razzaq, al-Shafi'i and Muhammad ibn al-Hasan from Malik's transmitters. He notes that some hadith scholars claimed the chain is broken because Ubayd Allah did not meet Umar, while others counted it connected since his meeting Abu Waqid is not disputed (al-Tamhid). The editor says Abu Zur'a stated he did not hear from Umar, and Ibn Khuzayma, al-Bayhaqi and al-Mizzi agreed, but Fulayh ibn Sulayman's report in Muslim, "Abu Waqid said: Umar asked me", shows he transmitted it from Abu Waqid, and holds that Ibn Abd al-Barr's judgment is sounder: the hadith is Abu Waqid's, and al-Tirmidhi authenticated it in the form Malik transmitted. 1 2 3
