Summary
Malik transmits from Abu al-Nadr, from Ubaydallah ibn Abdallah ibn Utba ibn Masud, that he went in to visit Abu Talha al-Ansari (may God be pleased with him), and found Sahl ibn Hunayf (may God be pleased with him) with him. Abu Talha called someone who pulled a striped carpet from under him. Sahl said: why did you pull it off? He said: because it has images in it, and the Messenger of God ﷺ said what you know about them. Sahl said: did the Messenger of God not say: except for what is an embroidered design on a garment? He said: yes, but it is more pleasing to my heart. The editor notes Ibn Abd al-Barr's view that the correct version is that the one who entered with Ubaydallah was Uthman ibn Hunayf (may God be pleased with him), not Sahl. 1
