Summary

«Difaf al-Kawthar» ("The Banks of al-Kawthar") is the title under which the Assabile archive keeps sixteen filmed episodes by Abu Ishaq al-Heweny, each about half an hour long. They are episodes of a filmed programme: every one opens and closes with the same sung anthem inviting the viewer to sit with "the shaykh of hadith", followed by the khutbat al-haja; al-Heweny's words are introduced with "and the muhaddith said"; he addresses "the brothers who are watching me now"; and in some he teaches at a board. ¹ ² ³ ⁴ In no episode does al-Heweny name the title «Difaf al-Kawthar», nor the date or place of recording, and the topics vary without following any one book. ⁵ ³ ⁶ The archive's media files for the episodes are numbered 05 to 20, so earlier episodes may not have been kept there.

Most episodes are admonitions on the softening of hearts and on character, each built on a hadith, a verse or a saying of the early generations: keeping one's good deeds, the road to God, sincerity, Khadija and the righteous wife, then three episodes explaining hadiths from the Book of Softening of Hearts (Kitab al-Riqaq) of Sahih al-Bukhari, the hadith of the men of the cave, the human devil, polygamy, good character, the heart, and the sayings of Abu Hazim. ⁵ ¹ ⁷ ⁸ ⁹ Two episodes are on the hadith sciences, one on the probity of narrators and the forgers and one on concealment in chains (tadlis); they seem to belong to a run of lessons on hadith terminology inside the same programme. ¹⁰ ³ Episode 10 in the archive repeats episode 3 word for word, and episodes 5 and 6 end with the same closing.

Some episodes give a hint of their time in al-Heweny's own words: he speaks of his Hajj with al-Albani in 1410 AH as a past event, ¹¹ and in the episode on polygamy he cites a file published by «Uktubar» magazine about two months earlier on figures of the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics. ¹²

Episodes

Episode 1: How to keep your good deeds. An episode continuing an earlier talk: after avoiding wrongs done to people and "ongoing sins", he speaks on repentance, the breadth of its door and the conditions of its acceptance, and Pharaoh's repentance when drowning, then on self-delusion about one's deeds, quoting Abu Hazim Salama ibn Dinar, Bilal ibn Sa'd, and Muhammad ibn Abi Amira from the «Kitab al-Zuhd» of Ibn al-Mubarak. ¹³ ¹⁴ ¹⁵ ¹⁶ ¹⁷ ¹⁸ ¹⁹ He says seventy thousand angels enter the Frequented House (al-Bayt al-Ma'mur) every day and never return to it. ²⁰

Episode 2: The road to God. He begins with death and the return to God as settled truths, then explains Ibn Mas'ud's hadith of the straight line with lines to its right and left, saying al-Bazzar narrated it with sound chains and that Ibn Hibban and al-Hakim graded it sound, ¹ ²¹ ²² with a digression on Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas keeping out of the strife. ²³ He then explains the hadith of al-Nawwas ibn Sam'an on the parable of the path, its two walls, the open doors and the curtains let down over them, and divides rulings into obligatory, recommended, permissible, forbidden and disliked; ²⁴ ²⁵ ²⁶ he makes Satan the first obstacle on the road, tells al-Fudayl ibn Iyad's parable of the sheepdog, and counts three obstacles: Iblis and his helpers, the devils of men and jinn, and the soul that commands evil. ²⁷ ²⁸ ²⁹

Episode 3: Sincerity and its disease, showing off. He builds on al-Fudayl's saying on the two conditions for a deed to be accepted, then explains the hadith of the first by whom the Fire is lit, and mentions Hatim al-Ta'i and his son Adi; ³⁰ ³¹ ³² he argues that shirk voids deeds from the fact that Surat al-An'am names eighteen prophets and then says that had they associated partners their deeds would have come to nothing, al-An'am 84 al-An'am 88, ³³ ³⁴ and then speaks of how God's oneness is guarded even in words: the prohibition on swearing by one's fathers and on saying "what God wills and you will", and the dream of al-Tufayl, A'isha's half-brother through her mother, as Ahmad narrates it. ³⁵ ³⁶ ³⁷ He says the basmala alone is worth one hundred and ninety good deeds, ten for each letter. ³⁸

Episode 4: Khadija and the righteous wife. He speaks of Khadija and her place with the Prophet ﷺ, and explains the words and locations of the hadith of the beginning of revelation; ³⁹ ⁴⁰ he then draws out the qualities of the virtuous wife, and relates A'isha's hadith on the two groups among the Prophet's wives and how they sent Umm Salama, then Fatima, then Zaynab bint Jahsh about the gifts, praising A'isha's fairness to Zaynab. ⁴¹ ⁴² ⁴³ ⁴⁴ ⁴⁵ He promises an episode on the qualities of the husband. ⁴⁶

Episode 5: The hadith of the two blessings. From the Book of Softening of Hearts in Sahih al-Bukhari he explains Ibn Abbas's hadith of two blessings in which many people are cheated, health and free time: he sets out its chain from al-Makki ibn Ibrahim, notes that Ahmad and al-Darimi, both teachers of al-Bukhari, also narrated it from al-Makki, and explains the shared narrator and corroboration (mutaba'a). ⁷ ⁴⁷ ² ⁴⁸ He relates that Maymun ibn Mihran came to al-Hasan al-Basri asking for admonition, and al-Hasan recited to him verses from the end of Surat al-Shu'ara' and he fainted, al-Shu'ara' 205, ⁴⁹ ⁵⁰ and ends with the question of praying for long life: Ahmad disliked it, others permitted it on the basis of Anas's hadith in «al-Adab al-Mufrad», and al-Heweny prefers permission when the prayer is qualified by obedience or wellbeing. ⁵¹ ⁵² ⁵³ ⁵⁴

Episode 6: Deeds that lengthen a life in obedience. He continues the previous episode with hadiths of multiplied reward: prayer in the Sacred Mosque and the Prophet's Mosque, and congregational prayer with its merit of twenty-five or twenty-seven degrees, which he holds obligatory, citing the prayer of fear; ⁵⁵ ⁵⁶ ⁵⁷ ⁵⁸ he tells the report of al-Qawariri and his dream, ⁵⁹ the hadith of Aws ibn Aws on the merit of Friday, which he grades sound, ⁶⁰ ⁶¹ the hadith of Umm Humayd that a woman's prayer in her home is better, and how she built a prayer place in the darkest spot of her house, ⁶² ⁶³ and that the preferred time of the night prayer is the middle of the night. ⁶⁴

Episode 7: The life of the Hereafter. From the Book of Softening of Hearts he explains Anas's hadith of the rajaz in which the Prophet prayed for the Ansar and the Muhajirun and said the true life is the life of the Hereafter, and narrates the Battle of the Trench and the meal and camel of Jabir ibn Abd Allah; ⁶⁵ ⁶⁶ ⁶⁷ ⁶⁸ he draws out the leader's responsibility and quotes al-Layth ibn Sa'd telling the governor of Egypt that a ruler is like the head of a spring: if the spring is muddied, the channels are muddied; ⁶⁹ ⁷⁰ then the Prophet's instruction to Uthman ibn Abi al-As to follow the weakest of his people, and the story of Mu'adh ibn Jabal lengthening the night prayer until the Prophet told him to recite al-Shams and al-Layl. ⁷¹ ⁷² ⁷³

Episode 8: The probity of narrators and the kinds of forgers. An episode on the hadith sciences continuing an earlier talk on the probity of narrators; he dates the start of forgery of hadith and classifies the forgers, telling the story of the beggar and "Dhi'b ibn Abi Dhi'b", the story of Ghiyath ibn Ibrahim with al-Mahdi, and the story of Yahya ibn Ma'in and Ahmad with the preacher of Kufa. ¹⁰ ⁷⁴ ⁷⁵ ⁷⁶ ⁷⁷ He says Imam al-Shafi'i founded the principles of jurisprudence and that reading «al-Risala» is enough to admire his strength and eloquence. ⁷⁸

Episode 9: The men of the cave. He says al-Raqim is the cave and the people of al-Raqim are the men of the cave in the hadith, and that al-Bukhari narrated their hadith in five places in his Sahih and Muslim in the Book of Remembrance and Supplication, by routes from Nafi' and Salim from Ibn Umar. ⁷⁹ ⁸⁰ ⁸¹ ⁸² He draws three lessons: devotion to parents, where he tells of Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas and his mother; chastity; and honesty over a hired man's wage; and he digresses on the love of wealth, citing Ibn Mas'ud's hadith on the heir's wealth. ⁸³ ⁸⁴ ⁸⁵ ⁸⁶ ⁸⁷ He says that signing one's whole estate over to one's daughters to exclude the other heirs is not permitted. ⁸⁸

Episode 10: A repeat of episode 3. The same recording, with the same words on sincerity and showing off. ⁸⁹

Episode 11: The human devil is more dangerous than the jinn devil. He observes that the Qur'an never calls Satan an enemy of God, while it does use that description of some humans, and concludes that the human devil is more dangerous, since he is seen and his nature rubs off. ⁹⁰ ⁹¹ ⁹² He then dwells on three verses which, he says, have no fourth like them in the Qur'an, in al-A'raf, al-Mu'minun and Fussilat, al-A'raf 199 al-Mu'minun 96 Fussilat 34: each commands good treatment of people and then seeking refuge from Satan, because Satan cannot be humoured. ⁹³ ⁹⁴ ⁹⁵ ⁹⁶ ⁹⁷ He digresses on how context shapes meaning, with the Prophet's smile at Ka'b ibn Malik as an example. ⁹⁸ ⁹⁹ He says the hadith in Sunan Abi Dawud in which the Prophet disowns one who lives among the polytheists is, in his judgement, correctly the words of a Companion and not of the Prophet. ¹⁰⁰

Episode 12: Polygamy. He sets out his view of polygamy and his arguments, answers the use of the hadith about Fatima, and holds jealousy to be a fault, citing hadiths of Umm Salama, A'isha and Anas. ¹⁰¹ ¹⁰² ¹⁰³

Episode 13: Concealment in the chain. A lesson in hadith terminology in which he explains at the board concealment (tadlis), its kinds and the height of the chain, with a hadith that Ibn Ishaq narrates by concealment as his example. ³ ¹⁰⁴ ¹⁰⁵

Episode 14: Good character. He speaks of good character and the bankrupt, and of the Prophet's refusal to have Abd Allah ibn Ubayy killed, and quotes Shu'ba ibn al-Hajjaj that storytellers take a hadith from us a span long and make it a cubit; ⁴ ¹⁰⁶ ¹⁰⁷ he then explains Abu Hazim's saying on setting right what is between a servant and his Lord, and the principle that recompense is of the kind of the deed, mentioning the book on party-crashing («al-Tatfil») of al-Khatib al-Baghdadi and the story of Bunan the party-crasher. ¹⁰⁸ ¹⁰⁹ ¹¹⁰

Episode 15: The heart. He opens a set of talks on the heart, explaining its importance and holding that the intellect is in the heart, and tells the story of Sufyan al-Thawri and Ma'n ibn Za'ida as an example of the state of one who emigrates with his religion. ⁶ ¹¹¹ ¹¹² He suggests that perhaps half the unbelief on earth comes from following the custom of the fathers. ¹¹³

Episode 16: The sayings of Abu Hazim. He chooses three sayings of Abu Hazim and explains them, quoting the verses of Ibn al-Mubarak on kings and the story of the sorcerer, the monk and the boy from Sahih Muslim; ¹¹⁴ ¹¹⁵ ¹¹⁶ he tells of his journey with al-Albani, and relates from the introduction to Sunan al-Darimi that Abu Musa al-Ash'ari saw circles in the mosque of Kufa counting glorifications on pebbles and did not object until he had consulted Ibn Mas'ud, taking this as evidence of the manners of the lesser scholar towards the greater. ¹¹ ¹¹⁷ ¹¹⁸ ¹¹⁹

What was left out

Left out of these episodes: what did not read clearly in the transcript, attacks on persons or groups, the figures he estimates for conditions in Egyptian society, practical rulings given in passing, and matters touching the difference between Sunnis and Shi'a that would need the views set out with their sources. The details are in the lane's progress file.
